SMI Training Modules
This chapter contains the nine separate cancer modules. Each module contains,
·        A description of the contents of the module
·        A short video presentation of some simple slides which cover introductory level information on the module topic. You can use the slides if you wish to share the information with colleagues.
·        Some additional resources such as peer reviewed research, papers and other videos from reputable sources. This is designed to provide additional information for those who may be interested in greater detail about the topic.
·        A short assessment survey to capture your knowledge on completion of the module. It is important to complete the assessments before you move on to the next module as it is a tool to help you embed your learning and prepare you for the next module.
Module 1 - What is Cancer
Module Overview
This module will
•             Talk about what is cancer
•             It will cover Risk Factors and Prevention
•             It will touch on some specific cancers
•             It will talk about barriers to seeking help and advice and ways to overcome these barriers
•             It will Talk about cancer myths
•             It will provide further sources of information and help.
Current statistics now tell us that 1 in 2 people will get Cancer in our lifetime and it is estimated that 10,000 deaths in the UK can be avoided every year if efforts to improve diagnosis and early presentation are increased.

Module 2 - Cancer Priorities in Leeds
Module Overview
This module aims to explain the current cancer situation in Leeds and the reasons why this toolkit focuses on specific cancers along with the local plans to address cancer diagnosis and prevention.
The most commonly diagnosed cancers in Leeds are Prostate, Breast, Lung and Bowel Cancer and they each have separate modules of their own within this toolkit.
The following video will cover the number of cancers diagnosed each year in Leeds along with survival rates and the local plans to increase uptake of screening programmes and to encourage early presentation of cancer symptoms. It will take approximately 4 minutes to complete and is presented by Megan from LHA.

Module 3 - Breast Cancer Awareness
Module Overview
The aim of this module is
- To increase awareness of what breast cancer is,
- Understand how it is diagnosed and treated.
- Â Learn about the possible signs and the screening
services that are available - Learn about the uptake of screening in Leeds

Module 4 - Bowel Cancer Awareness
Module Overview
The aim of this module is to
- Increase awareness of what bowel cancer is
- Understand how it is diagnosed and treated
- Learn about the possible signs and the screening services available
- Discuss barriers around screening
- Learn about screening uptake in Leeds and how to encourage more people to complete their kit.
Bowel cancer screening is the only national cancer screening programme that is open to both men and woman and can be done in the comfort of your own home. Please view Megan from LHA who will cover the main points of bowel cancer. This video takes approximately 12 minutes.

Module 5 - Lung Cancer Awareness
Module Overview
The aims of Module 5 are to
- Increase awareness of what Lung Cancer is
- Understand how it is diagnoses and treated
- Learn about the possible signs
- Increase awareness of the walk-in chest X-ray service in Leeds
Lung Cancer becomes more common as you get older with around 50,000 cases diagnosed every year. More than 60% of Lung cancer cases in the UK are caused by smoking.

There is currently no national screening programme for prostate cancer, and the following module contains the current guidance.

Module 8 - Meaningful Conversations
Module Overview
The Aim of this module is to
- Understand why it’s important to have more conversations about cancer
- Learn skills for having good conversations such as
- Empathy and Compassion
- Active listening
- Asking good questions
- How to talk to people with cancer
- How to create conditions to have good conversations
- Learn about some of the barriers to talking about cancer and how to overcome them

Module 9 - Living with and Beyond Cancer
Module Overview
This module is an opportunity to recap much of the previous 8 modules and will act as a definitive resource for moving forward. It has been compiled by the West Yorkshire and Harrogate Cancer Alliance for use in this toolkit.
The Aim of this module is to
- Understand Cancer as a long-term condition
- Raise awareness of the different treatment options
- Understand the non-clinical concerns of those living with cancer
- Raise awareness of the support offers that are available to those living with and beyond cancer
